Dr Phil - Concerned or Conniving?

Dr Phil
Dr Phil

Everyone is now aware of Britney's most recent meltdown which resulted in her being taken by ambulance to Cedars Sinai Medical Center. It was the moment we all saw coming from a mile away and was covered extensively in the media.
Isn't it amazing how we all love a good car crash? We know that the end result is going to be gruesome and we will wish we had never looked, but we just cannot look away. I guess it is just morbid curiosity.
Anyway, while she was in hospital, she was visited by Dr Phil who was apparently concerned about her and just wanted to help. The question is - who exactly is he trying to help? Britney or himself, or more to the point, his bank balance?
He has been trying to put together a show about her for a while but she would not have a bar of it. Does he honestly think that doing a public intervention on television is going to help the girl? His ratings, sure, but I don't imagine that it is a wise move regarding Britney.
It has been reported that Dr Phil showed up and was allowed into Britney's room without her knowledge and her consent. The hospital had absolutely no right to let a man in there when she was in the mental state that she was, who undoubtedly put pressure on her to come on his show so he could "help" her.

This is ridiculous and the hospital should be in serious trouble for it. He was not one of her doctors and should not have had access to her. Just because the staff may have recognised him and been somewhat star struck, they still have a job to do and rules to uphold.
And Dr Phil. I used to be a fan, but to see him do something like this makes me question if helping people really is his priority, not just a means to make money. What he did surely must be unethical, but then, when you have a tv show and fodder this tempting shows up, ethics seem to fly right out the window.

I agree this is not a good situation but unless there are some bans put on and/or the person is locked up, visitors just come and go.

He does help a lot of people, I don't care for the public profile but when all else fails why not.

She has lost her children, someone needs to put it straight to her about her behaviour being inappropriate, this whole thing is a disaster.

But her consent is required and I, a cynic by temperament, do believe he genuinely wanted to help.

Love your logo, love your banner, I'm sure you will continue to do great stuff.

I used to hate Phil, then became a semi-fan, and now I'm back to having doubts. He's had a LOT of bad press lately. I'm taking up katyzzz's abandoned cynicism here - I don't think his motives are pure, considering he should know better than to take this approach if he really wants to help someone other than himself.

Great post, Rebecca.

Not his fan
Never was.
Too many formulaic answers for people with deep problems.

Too manyshows about families in debt having marital problems over money. he explores their feeling but did not fix the debt problem. WE never know what happens to all these people.

Duh?

Hi Katyzzz,

Thanks for the comment. I agree that something needs to be done about Britney. But I also think that if Dr Phil really wanted to help her he should have done it privately. Everyone was watching her every move at that point to see what she would do next, and I think he capitalised on that.

Cheers,
Bec

Hi Michaelie,

Thanks for dropping in. I agree with you thoughts entirely. No one really benefits here but Dr Phil and he does need to raise his profile a bit.

Cheers,

Hi Damo,

Thanks for the input. I also have wondered about the people who he "helps". Yes I understand that it's not his job to sort out monetary problems; there are specialists for that, but to just send the people off that have turned to him for help. He finds a temporary solution for them which does not do much to help them in the long run because they are still up to their eyeballs in debt, have no way of paying it back and so the stress on the relationship is still there. I think the reason that we never hear what happens to them is because it rarely ends well. He is all about self promotion, so do you really think that if he had an opportunity to brag about something he has done, he would let it slip past?
Wow, I never realised that I felt so strongly about this. Lol.

Cheers,
Bec

I think the picture above says it all. I take huge offence to people yelling their opinions at me and that's what he does. He has a few good points then he moves into judgemental responses.

Hi Tracey,

I know!!! He is soooo judgemental. Like he is so much better then anyone else? People go on his show knowing that they have a problem only to be told by a little bald man on his high horse that they have a problem?! Doesn't seem too helpful to me. The picture really is worth a 1000 words isn't it?

Cheers,
Bec

Dr. Phil was actually asked to attend by Britney's mother, Lynne spears. Apparently she and Dr Phils wife are quite close.

I do realise that Lynne Spears asked him to attend, but she and Brit have not been close for a while, and to be honest, she's a bit of a media whore.
